2025It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and valued MHMT family member, Tyler Johnson.
Tyler was a remarkable talent whose creativity, warmth, and passion for theatre inspired everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
He was preparing to direct Beautiful: The Carole King Musical for spring 2026 - a project that reflected his love of music, storytelling, and community.
We join his many friends, former cast mates, and fellow artists across Medicine Hat in mourning this tremendous loss. Tyler’s kindness, humour, and generous spirit touched every stage and every heart. Our deepest condolences go out to Tyler’s family and loved ones.
His legacy will continue to shine brightly in the stories we tell and the friendships he helped create.
MHMT Board of Directors
Our hearts are broken as we share the sudden passing of Tyler Johnson, born April 28, 1989, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Tyler’s life was a story told in laughter, music, and generosity — one that filled every room he walked into and every heart he touched.
o know Tyler was to know joy. He was hilarious, stubborn, opinionated, and utterly unforgettable — a born storyteller with a gift for finding humor in everything (and for keeping it going long past the punchline). His larger-than-life personality commanded attention, but his kindness, loyalty, and generosity made people stay. Helpful was an understatement — Tyler was the first to lend a hand, offer a ride, bake something sweet, or brighten your day with a perfectly timed joke.
Tyler had three great loves: his people, his creativity, and the magic of the stage. His “family” included not only his parents, siblings, nephew, and niece, but an enormous circle of chosen family — friends who became so much more through countless shared stories, shows, and adventures.
Diagnosed with Crohns and Colitis at the age of 12, Tyler lived with strength and humor that inspired everyone around him. His heart for hospitality led to a successful early career in hotel management, where his warmth and work ethic shone. But his truest passion was theatre — and the communities it built.
Tyler’s first show was Jack and the Beanstalk with Medicine Hat High School, the spark that ignited a lifelong love for the stage. He became a dedicated volunteer actor and director with Medicine Hat Musical Theatre, where his creativity and leadership elevated every production. His directing credits included Next to Normal, The Drowsy Chaperone, Sister Act, and Now. Here. This. He was also slated to direct Beautiful: The Carole King Musical this season — a show as full of heart as he was.
Tyler’s passion for theatre naturally extended to his love of New York City — his happy place, where Broadway lights and endless energy mirrored his own. It’s easy to imagine him there now, somehow behind the curtain once again, calling cues, cracking jokes, and making sure the spotlight hits just right.
Tyler leaves to cherish his memory, his mother Lorena Wadman (Charles Wadman), father Clint Johnson (Lorri Carter), brothers Jason Johnson, Jarrett Johnson (Jessica Johnson) with nephew Blake, step-siblings Nathan Wadman, Alyssa Wadman (Matt Anderson) with niece Molly. He is also remembered by countless extended and chosen family members who loved him deeply.
The celebration of Tyler’s life will take place in the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend officiating. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so on Monday, October 20, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday one hour prior to the service.
